Academic
Mentoring Program (High School)
BLAST's
High School component of the Academic Mentoring
Program places CSULB students, from the College of Education,
to work with 9th and 10th grade students who need assistance in
preparing to pass the California High School Exit Exam
(CAHSEE). All High School Program mentors are highly qualified
as they are studying to receive their single subject teaching
credential in secondary education.
Academic
Mentoring Program
(K - 8)
BLAST's
"Academic Mentoring Program" for students in grades K-8 is
our signature program placing college student volunteers to work with
at-risk youth in partnering after school programs.
BLAST academic mentors work with children one-on-one to provide
homework assistance and high-quality lesson plans in academic
subjects such as language arts, math, science, social studies, and
literacy support. BLAST mentors are role models for youth and provide
an opportunity for children to learn about and explore the possbilities
of higher education.
BLAST academic
mentors work with children one-on-one and in small groups, implementing our
three core objectives:
1. To improve
academic performance
2. To promote
future thinking and encourage higher education
3. To encourage
healthy social, emotional, and behavioral development
4. To help students
graduate from high school and attend college
Washington
Middle School Technology Program
The
after school technology program at Washington Middle
School (WMS) brings college mentors and students in grades
6-8 together for the purpose of developing literacy skills through
fun and engaging technology-based activities. Students are
asked to research a topic and present their findings in a
PowerPoint presentation, personal website, or iMovie. Research
topics include: interesting careers, how to improve the
community, and life at Washington Middle School.
Northpointe After School Program
BLAST's
first full-service, year-round after school program is held at
the Northpointe Housing Community in north Long Beach. Through a
fully staffed program, BLAST is able to serve 50 students daily with a
wide variety of after school program activities including: homework
help, academic skill building and games, reading and literacy
activities, technology skill building, arts & crafts, cooking, recreational
games, team building activities, cultural lessons, and PeaceBuilders'
conflict resolution activities.
Operation
Read Program
Long
Beach BLAST partners with the Los Angeles County's
Probation Department to provide literacy tutoring to partnering
after school programs. Operation Read tutors work with students
who are performing at least two grades below reading level. The
program emphasizes learning through phonics, journal writing
activities, word games, reading aloud, and fluency exercises.
Operation Read strives to make learning fun, show students the
joys of reading, and help young people become life long readers.
